Main Course Level 1 - Beginner
Listening I can start to understand familiar words about myself and my family when people speak very slowly and clearly. People have to repeat things for me
Speaking I can start to use simple words and sentences to talk about my home and people I know.
Reading I can start to understand names, words and very simple sentences, e.g. on notices and posters or in catalogues
Writing

• I can start to write simple words and sentences.

• I can fill in forms with my name and simple information about me

Talking to People

• I can to start to reply in a simple way if the other person repeats, and helps me a lot to say what I'm trying to say.

• I can start to ask and answer simple questions

Main Course Level 2 - Elementary
Listening I can recognise familiar words and basic sentences about myself, my family and my world when people speak slowly and clearly.
Speaking I can use simple phrases and sentences to describe where I live and people I know.
Reading I can understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences, e.g. on notices and posters or in catalogues.
Writing

• I can write a short, simple postcard, e.g. sending holiday greetings.

• I can fill in forms with personal details, e.g. entering my name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.

Talking to People

• I can talk to people in a simple way, if the other person repeats things and helps me say what I am trying to say.

• I can ask and answer simple questions for things I need or about things I know.

Main Course Level 3 - Lower Intermediate
Listening I can understand well known words about things which are important for me, e.g. my life and my family , my home, my work, my free time and going shopping.
Speaking I can use phrases and sentences to describe simply my family and other people, how I live, my education and my job.
Reading

• I can read simple texts.

• I can usually understand and find information in advertisements and timetables.

Writing

• I can write short, simple notes and messages about things which I need and which are important to me.

• I can write a very simple personal letter, e.g. thanking someone for something.

Talking to People • I can communicate in a simple way about things I know about well.

• I can talk to people quite slowly but sometimes I will need help to keep the conversation going.

Main Course Level 4 - Intermediate
Listening
  • Normal conversation is OK
  • TV and radio are still quite difficult without teacher help
  • Group conversation more difficult
  • Has problems recognising changes in attitude
  • Has some problems with more specialised topics
  • Still some failures to understand well
  • Asks for help and clarification when necessary
Speaking
  • Speech should be reasonably fluent with communication taking place most of the time.
  • Errors should not interfere too much with communication
  • Use of language is generally appropriate with a range of expression
  • Can take the initiative in conversation
  • Can talk well about personal situations, work and family
  • Can express opinions and discuss some abstract ideas
  • Can manage conversation quite well and discuss both future and past events.
Reading
  • Can understand more complex texts such as newspapers or novels.
  • Can distinguish between major and minor points and can handle a wider range of text styles.
  • Can adopt a range of reading skills when meeting a new text. Speed: 100-200 words per minute
Writing
  • Correct use of grammar and vocabulary with any mistakes not effecting communication very much
  • Spelling and punctuation are quite accurate. The overall intention of the writer is always clear and choice of style is appropriate to purpose.
  • Can write letters independently after practising with a model
  • Can use a dictionary to select correct language

Cambridge Preliminary

Main Course Level 5 - Higher Intermediate
Listening

  • Uses language appropriately in a wide range of functions and expression
  • Can handle all conversational situations and can produce long and complex utterances
  • Fluent speaker
  • Can express attitudes and personal views
  • Can 'play' with language
Reading
  • Can understand a wide range of complex texts including literature or academic texts
  • Does not require a dictionary and can employ a whole range of reading skills in dealing with texts
  • Reading speeds will vary considerably with reading purpose but will be 200+ words per minute.
Writing
  • Highly accurate use of language. Use of language is always appropriate to context and the writer's intention and audience.
  • Range of expression and style is very wide and the writer is able to produce longer pieces of writing that contains organisation and progression

Cambridge Advanced

Main Course Level 7 - Very Advanced
Listening
